About The Department
The Department of Botany was established in the year 1998 with BBM (Biochemistry, Botany and Microbiology) Combination, BCBt (Botany, Chemistry and Biotechnology) in 2005 and CBZ (Chemistry, Botany and Zoology) in 2020, which open diverse career opportunities in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, research laboratories, environmental sciences, healthcare, and academia.
Established with a vision to promote scientific temperament and environmental consciousness, the department combines classical botanical knowledge with modern biological advancements.
The department offers an intellectually stimulating environment where students gain in-depth understanding of plant sciences, biodiversity, biotechnology, ecology, genetics, medicinal plants, and sustainable environmental practices.
The department is enriched with qualified and dedicated faculty members who inspire students through innovative teaching methods, practical exposure, research orientation, and mentorship. Their commitment to academic excellence helps students develop analytical thinking, scientific curiosity, and professional competence.
The laboratories are well-equipped with modern instruments and provide hands-on training in plant anatomy, taxonomy, physiology and plant tissue culture.
Students are encouraged to actively participate in field studies, herbarium preparation, botanical excursions, seminars, workshops, thereby transforming theoretical learning into practical expertise.

1. Sixth mass extinction crisis and its impact on biodiversity and human welfare:
The Department of Botany and Nature Club, JSS College for Women (Autonomous), Saraswathipuram, Mysuru, in association with IQAC, organised an awareness programme on the sixth mass extinction crisis and its impact on biodiversity and human welfare on 04.02.2025.
After inaugurating the programme, Dr. K.N. Amruthesh, Professor, Department of Studies in Botany, University of Mysore, Mysuru, addressed the students. In his talk, he noted that "Rising temperatures, ocean acidification, and changing weather patterns disrupt ecosystems."
Dr. Rechanna, Principal presided over the function. M M Swamy, HoD of Botany Faculty and students of Natural Sciences were participated.
2. Plantation drive on the occasion of world Earth day:
World Earth day organised by nature club in association with NSS unit on 24.04.2025. the main objective of the plantation drive is to promote environmental awareness an encouraging participants to take practical steps toward restoring and protecting the planet.
50 students, teachers and volunteers have been participated and were a great success and fostering unit among all participants.

1. Awareness program on ‘Save Vulture’ :
Departments of Botany and Zoology jointly organized an awareness program on the the topic “Save Vulture” in association with „wildlife conservation foundation‟ on 19-08-2025.
Sri. Rajkumar D, Managing trustee, WCF was the resource person. He spoke on the threats to wildlife. He has emphasized on the threats to vulture.
Dr. Harsha, Associate Professor, Dept of Environmental studies, KSOU, Mysuru was the chief guest. He has mentioned the activities of wildlife conservation foundation.
Dr. Rechanna, Principal presided over the function. M. M. Swamy and Jnaneshwari.C, HoDs of botany and Zoology, faculty members and students were present.
2. World Ozone day:
On the occasion of “Ozone day” celebration Nature Club has organized on-spot poster making competition on 25.09.2025 in the Botany Laboratory poster making theme wasFrom Science to Global Action. 15 students from Natural Sciences have actively participated.
3. World Earth Day (2026):
Nature Cub, Department of Botany celebrated World Earth day on 22.04.2026 in the herbal garden to raise the awareness about environmental protection and importance of conserving natural resources. The main aim of earth day is to educate the students about environmental issues like pollution, climate change and loss of biodiversity.
Sri M. M. Swamy, HoD, Department of Botany addressed the gathering and spoke about the importance of protecting nature, conserving resources and impacts of global warming. The program included the practical activities where Dr. Rechanna, Principal presided over by planting saplings, Faculty members and students contributed the success of the program.
